Original Skateboards Crew Lapping South

In the off season, take a nice drive around scenic Sussex County. You'll probably notice there are an awful lot of hills 'round these parts, many of which are suitable for the fine sport of downhill skateboarding. The crew over at Original have been perfecting their many sizes and shapes of skateboards and longboards in order to dial in that perfect asphalt decent. It just so happens that when the temperatures drop, the Original staff like to strap on the old knuckle dragger snow surfer or two planks and do a little cross training.

Mountain Creek is proud to be the home mountain for the Original Skateboards team and employees. United in our shared love of sliding sideways down mountains.

RedBull ButterCup Coming Satudray

If you've driven/ridden by the Arena lately, you'll notice the RedBull Buttercup butter boxes are in place. Not only is this contest focused on fun, its course is super user friendly. With the advent of reverse camber technology, this contest has every reason to be going off! Press your pickle, jibstick, flatkick, v-rockered science project through the RedBull lexan. Get out there and have some fun, NXTZ, Oakley, Neff, Nike, Forum, RedBull didn't come all this way for nothing. JibLab put it together on this super-collaboration, so don't let them down. It's also going to be beautiful out tomorrow, like spring beautiful, so get some wild thrift store gear (Hawaiian shirts, jumpsuits, dresses, "Number One Boss" tees) and throw down.

If you live in or around the Vernon area, you're probably taking note of the snow falling. You're probably also saying something like, "I thought this was supposed to be rain." You may or may not have checked the forecast, and noticed that according to the internet, a source more reliable than your own perceptions, it's apparently raining. I can say with stern confidence that it is in fact snowing. It's snowing relatively hard as well. It may not be sticking to the ground as of yet, but it's definitely sticking to the other snow that's on the mountain right now. It may be mid-February, but winter isn't over.
Below is a short art film titled "Uh.. Yeah, It's Snowing." It's a commentary on the despondence of youth within snowboard culture, so much so that even when a cultural participant's ultimate wish is granted, the young must still give off an air of indifference. The film has no clear subject, yet the viewer can hear a male voice in the background performing his necessary role as an individual who is not easily impressed. These contemporary snowboarders have an ability to act independent of worldly weather patterns so much so that they are unmoved by snow currently falling. Here, we are reminded of great existentialist thinker Soren Kierkegaard. These youth feel as if the snow falls in the context of their own destiny, not the destiny of inevitable weather patterns.

Nah, we're kidding, see ya out there, fools.

RedBull ButterCup/New Rails

Getcha' Roll On.

Just in time for the epic spring conditions out there, (it's like 44 degrees out) some newer favorites hit the hill. The double barrel down rail replaced the down flat down single barrel, and the Quebec Ledge replaced the vacant lot between the C and the double barrel.

The Quebec Ledge holds a special place in many of our hearts. It's conception was brought about by some of the most dedicated park and JibLab staff, who, coincidentally, are all members of MENSA. By combining "real spot" recognition before real spot recognition was even a thing with on hill subtlety, the Quebec Ledge is able to stand the test of time. Unlike the real ledge on Rue d'Youville, Quebec, Canada, this one is made out of nice metal and lexan, so you can do whatever you want.

Bozwreck Representation at Creek

Walking around North, not one, but two Bozwreck decks were spotted. The owners of these boards are unknown, but what is known is that Mountain Creek is one of the only mountains you will ever see two OG Bozwreck decks leaned up outside of a multi-million dollar lodge. Can't fault anyone for giving into the cultural disparity between supporting anything Nate Bozung and Matty Ryan do, and enjoying a pint at the beautiful Schuss Bar.

It's 10pm on a Saturday, and we're all logged in. If you're reading this right now, you're missing the foam party at Kink, so discontinue this particular internet endeavor and head over there. It has foam and members of the opposite gender. If that isn't the makings of a good time, the answer to what is certainly will not be found here. It's also almost mid February. This is the time when one chooses to either begin taking days off from the hill, making good on promises to friends and loved ones that they'll be around this winter, or shows complete disregard to a standard social life and continues slashing. Valentines Day's are forgotten, girlfriends and boyfriends are pissed, employers begin questioning an employees' commitment, rent checks go unwritten, etc. etc. The following edit dropped on our good friend's East Snowboard Mag's Site, and it's a good one.

Bistro is putting it down both on the board and blog. Consistent and informed updates, a hectic travel schedule, and more street cred than you can shake a stick at. Plus he knows the ol' back 270 to fakie, a trick that confuses the lift line peanut gallery so much that they often chose to neglect it's existence.

USASA Weekend At Creek

USASA, the USA Snowboard Association, has been putting on slopestyle and pipe events forever. These contests have been the springboard for many contest-pro careers.
Unfortunately, due to it being 50 degrees for long stretches of time, we do not have enough snow to dig out a half pipe. Hopefully that isn't a surprise for anyone. In the spirit of getting things done despite adverse conditions, USASA has announced two Slopestyle Events. The set up is going to be jib focused, and we're waiting on photos of what the course looks like so far. JibLab and Park Crew are out on the hill now making sure everything is prime.

Registration is 8am - 9am Saturday and Sunday.
Lift tickets will be $35 for participating athletes and their families which can be purchased at South Guest Services
Registration will be upstairs, outside of the Kink
Contest set up will be on Bear Peak and it looks like a good one!

Girl’s Bag Jump Shred Sessions

Tonight's Girls Shred Session is going to add the ol’ trick pillow to the jam. The only requirement is to be able to point it off the jump. This is going to be one of the most progressive sessions yet being the bag jump opens up all kinds of possibilities. Front 5’s, front 3’s, backflips, lawn darts and methods can all be perfected. Who wouldn’t want to spend some time with the homies jumping into a massive inflatable bag?

Superpass Is A Wrap

Anyone who was around this weekend probably took a lap past those perfect Superpass jumps. Jib Lab, Park Crew, grooming, and snow making really pulled it together for this one. We're going to have some of the biggest jumps in the series because they kept on it, didn't give up, and didn't check Facebook comments. In an unprecedented move, the jumps were in reverse order, being largest to smallest. Jump lines don't usually begin with the money booter, but winters don't usually involve weeks of 50 - 60 degree weather. The first jump was the showtime hit, and local heros like Scotty and Brian Hopper, Timmy Kempson, Chad Strothers, Brett Stewart, Richie Verost, and Eric Ryan were all floating lofty 5's and 7's. Next generation ripper Sean Neary was hitting all three hits like a grown man. There was even some corkage occurring off the first hit, laying waste to lift line claims. Mark McMorris would be proud.

It was good to see the snow feature crowd be able to get off of the rail jam circuit and showcase some old school boarding. Jump contests remind us of when the days of jibbing were still infantile. With every snow feature comp comes the discussion of defining "real" snowboarding, and I think the general consensus is that every snowboarder loves "catching air," "getting tubular" or "bagging oxygen." These terms, which are now all so irrelevant that our moms use them to describe a day on the hill, somehow begin to trickle back into our vernacular during jump contests. It's good to remember the roots, and why a little bit of camber under your feet can't hurt. Every year it becomes more impressive that a group of riders who have a three month season, and jumps that are rarely bigger than "medium," can come through and put down some of the nicest spins and methods imaginable. Don't get us wrong, there was plenty of no-grabbing and hand dragging to go around, but every once and a while, through the darkness of sketch, came the beam of light that was a perfectly executed Indy 540 or frontside 7 melon. Jumps are a beautiful thing.

One more point of note before we leave you with the photos, which is the only reason to check the internet anyway, always remember to use a hip to its full potential. Matt Behre and Brett Stewart were doing proper Northwest methods. The hipped method should have been a first run requirement. Other items of note: Chad Strothers gapped the entire hip to the other side, which was incredible, loose, and would have made Mr. Pat Bridges smile, and Brett Stewart found some nice deep transition with a frontside 3. Seek out these gentleman, and inquire on their hip knowledge. They will be more than willing to educate.

Drew from Snowboarder Mag hooked everyone up with some great prizes, all while being one of the friendliest people, ever. Drew, you're the man. CAPiTA Super Corporation gave away a "NAS" deck. "NAS" is an acronym for Normal Ass Snowboard, and that's exactly what it is. It's a cambered charger with that nice OG stiffness. Eric Ryan took first and walked away with the shred stick as well as some goods from HCSC, Spy, and Union. Brian Hopper took second and also got a table full of goodies that he seemed more than stoked on. Sean Neary walked away with 3rd. He's a young kid, and its good to see 'em get out there and hit some jumps. He's being raised well by some of the best legends of Mountain Creek, look out for this homie in the future.

Matty Wright took an Instagram photo of the first jump. We would add some sociological critique of Instagram's hipness, and it's eventual influence on the snowboard contest world, but that's for another time.

Superpass Jumps Are The Size of a Modest Starter Home

Ya' heard right. So Snowboarder Mag, Capita, Union, Spy, and HCSC are all ready to give away a nice spot at Superpark 16.

For those of you who haven't had the privilege of attending a Superpark event, here's a quick run down of why it's one of the best times on a board.

Superpark is a beast. The jumps are built by the best in the business, and they generally run about the same size as a 4 story tenement apartment. They are the biggest mounds of snow that should ever exist, and the idea that human beings enjoy flying through the air off of them is testament to our insanity.

There are often two camps within the Superpark event, super pros and style pros. This is where most internet comment boards heat up with which discipline of snowboarding is truly snowboarding, and the question is asked again of why most style pros don't just settle for careers as high ranking amateur skateboarders. The job of the super pro is to arrive, on time, void of any stories of "night-before" debauchery, execute some sponsorship requirements, and proceed to do some of the most intense athletic snowboarding ever done before. This usually includes triple corks, 1440s, and anything else that makes a rodeo 7 look obsolete. The only solace for these gentlemen and ladies is that they generally make a nice wage, own houses and cars, and have steady girlfriends or wives.

The second camp, the style pros, generally arrive late due to some sort of automobile issue. After figuring out what was up with their homie's 1998 Ford Explorer, or their mom's station wagon, they continue up the access road trading stories of how much more effort was put into partying last night than riding today. Once finally entering the park, general shenanigans ensue. This includes, but is not limited to: the movement of on-hill marketing promotion to strange spots to create new "features," slashing snow onto others around the hill or in the base area, and frequenting the lodge for a beverage. After these minimum requirements are met, style pros usually form two splinter groups. Those who are over it, because they got hurt jumping off of a building onto a down rail weeks before, and those who underdog the superpros. This is where kids like Scott Blum land on the cover of Snowboarder Mag doing gravity defying Andrecht plants. While super pros will generally map out which tricks they would like to do, style pros often times discover they can actually do tricks of pro level caliber in a terrain park. Its awesome. Everyone has fun.

So consider this a dress rehearsal for that. Here are some photos of the jump line beginning to take shape in case you haven't been down here in a minute.

Volcom Peanut Butter Rail Jam

With a three month long season, it's hard to envision not having a contest every weekend. Last weekend, Volcom came out and hosted their annual PB&RJ. Feeding kids peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, or jelly sandwiches, or just bread in this economic climate is no easy task. In fact, one could argue that PB&RJ is the original "safety net" of snowboard contest economic policy. With the proper planning, it would be feasable to feed one's self for a week strictly on Volcom's supplies. It may also be possible to claim "food flow team," being your eating for free on Volcom's dime, if one were so inclined. These ideas hearken back to the days of companies having "street teams," or professional sticker placement specialists.

Hopefully those days aren't dead.

Back From the Abyss of Denver's SIA

It's no question that snowboarding and skiing are an industry. The word itself gets tossed around with reckless abandon as if those who use it have no respect for language or redundancy. Even those here who update the park blog are guilty of using the term without fully thinking its repercussions. Industry, as a word, is capable of actually removing fun from a situation. There is nothing less fun than dealing with the word industry. Scholars of 18th and 19th Century America may recall the Industrial Revolution. A cultural shift that was completely devoid of good times. The swelling of urban populations, overcrowding, child labor, malnutrition, pollution, everything becoming encased in a thick film of soot, all became common place. This is strikingly similar to the trajectory of the snow sport industry. Quiet mountain towns like Salt Lake City, Denver, and Burlington are now bustling hubs of shred media and product. Young riders and skiers rent houses intended for a small family with every intention of sleeping 15-20 of their favorite "bros." Unpaid, underage am riders work tirelessly to land increasingly difficult tricks with proper sticker and hoodie logo placement with the hopes of getting a clip in the bonus section of an iTunes download. Once healthy, strapping, young ladies and gentleman begin diets of Ramen noodles, Taco Bell, and gas station nachos. Pristine mountain scenery succumbs to gas powered sleds, wax shavings, beverage containers, and lifted trucks. Normal, intelligent people begin using words and phrases like, "bro," "dude," "sick," "over it," "that'd be tight," and the infamous "two if you know me."

But, let's not dwell on the negatives. Somewhere within all of this lies the concept of unlimited fun and freestyle. The idea that you can do whatever you want, the only requirement being that your feet are attached to something sliding down a hill, is a good thing. Here in New Jersey, we're pretty isolated from the constant barrage of cool-guy requirements, but if you are at all interested in next year's product, (2012-2013), here's some links to the ol' Snowsports Industries America (SIA) trade show.

First Girls Only Shred Sessions of 2012

If you've checked Facebook, you've seen that South isn't going to open today. Fog eats up snow, especially snow that's being moved around by riding over it. And rain never helps either. Vernon peak is still open, so go get your carves in, jump out of some side cuts, and take the Cab for old times sake. There's enough snow to set up a down rail, or gap, or wallride if you're willing to put in some set up time.

Tomorrow, Tuesday January 23rd, will be the first actual Girls Only Shred Sessions here at South. As you can deduce from the title, if you're a guy, you're out. Only girls are go-listed for this one.

TransAm is a wrap until next year

This Saturday was one of the most anticipated days on the hill since opening. We were scheduled to get a few inches of fresh, which happened, and the Transworld/High Cascade TransAm set up was open for business. As in the days of yore, the TransAm has a focus on creativity. Park crew and JibLab are given the green light to build whatever features they can think of within the parameters set up by sponsors/TransAm.

Having these minimum requirements is an asset to the park build. Three sets of 2 features, one having to be a minipipe, set the stage for a contest that takes up a huge amount of real estate on the hill. The street rainbow made its way out, and apparently it's en vogue to casually 270 to the top. Two pole jams were employed to rocket participants into the minipipe, so a lot of allyoop 270ing went down. After the pipe was the Anon up box. Up boxes are best used by those who think differently, not to be bogged down by industry norms and trick selection snobs. The session really heated up when people started handplanting over it, and a misty flip may or may not have went down. If you chose the other route you rode through the MuscleMilk six pack and then over the Zumiez couch/living room dropping you into the Coal snow beanies. Below are some photos from the event to prove it happened, and to get everyone hyped for the edit/actual photos that will be up soon.

Matt Behre was ripping in the most traditional way. He rides fast, smooth, and lands tricks properly. The things he lands are always intentional, and he has a mean method. He rides a Blak Sheep snowboard, and he's always repping Outkast Sports. He's a locals local. Everyone was stoked to give him the gold. Pat Bridges would be proud.

Scotty Hopper has been doing comps all over the country since forever. It's good to see him do some mellow no-grab 360s over couches. He's got a mean nose poke when he spins frontside. He's the jump contender, dialed and well thought out. He rides fresh DC stuff, and may, in fact, drive a Bentley.

Richie Verost needs no introduction. His gear is awesome, his attitude is awesome, and like Behre, he hasn't cut his hair in years. He's got Jersey pride oozing out from all angles, and he stomps tricks clean with 6 year old bindings. He's also on the Blak Sheep program. Don't forget where you came from.

Local homie Brett Strother was quoted as saying: "The hike wasn't bad." No naysayers.

TransAm Is Tomorrow

High Cascade Snowboard Camp has been running the TransAm for years now. What started as a homage to mini shred features and other things that end up in Scott Stevens video parts, has now become a full fledged national amateur fun fest that brings participants from far and wide. This year Jib Lab built a new rail and moved a whole grip of snow to allow for BMX jumps and a mini-halfpipe to be in the same contest. We crafted up this short to show you John Hanson and Marc Tremain at work.

Dhane Knakkergaard X Eddie Choe Two Plank Collaboration

Dhane is one of those enigmatic skiers in the way that he defies description. He looks super comfortable spinning, his arms are down, and he doesn't have to hide his style under layers of tall-t's. He's always down to session a rail, and not take things too seriously. Eddie Choe is a similar figure. He's one of the nicest kids on the hill, and is always skiing or filming. A couple years ago he rocked gold outerwear, and he may still drive a lowered car. The definition of flossing. Eddie lives Upstate now and goes to college, but it was awesome that he came down and shared this joyous edit.

With TransAM weekend fast approaching, it seems as good a time as any to post what notable park features are up throughout South Peak. Rather than tease you with a few photos, we're giving you the January 20th Mega Post of the park so far. Being its been relatively cold (it was 18 degrees this morning), and the humidity has been low, those over at snow making have been able to blow snow night after night. Depending on how much natural snow we get tonight, we might have to skip out for a couple of Sunday runs on the Cabriolet and burn some euro carves.

Terrain park aficionados may have noticed the back of the Show Room, Mountain Creek's premier place for hard and soft goods, is home to one of the most coveted media set ups ever assembled.

A 70" TV next to an iMac. We're on some pre-economic-collapse, NYC-film-school-grad-student-West 4th & Broadway media station kick back there. The best part about the set up is that it is for everyone. It's a fully operational on hill editing station for aspiring Pierre Wikbergs and Mike McEntire's who don't have the luxury of Final Cut Pro or Apple Computers at home. Sign a waiver and you can use the computer to edit your own footage. Bring your cam, your usb/firewire connectors, and fire it up. We're working on getting you guys some rental GoPro's (The Official Camera of Mountain Creek) so you can leave your HVX at home. Sign a waiver, bring a credit card for a deposit + camera fee (we're working out the dollar amount) and go shred with one of our cams. Then come in and edit it. Pretty mellow considering most of us here started our snow media careers with Hi-8 cameras and double VHS deck editing.

Here's a little teaser of what's in there. Go into the show room, buy some gear, watch a video on the TV, and start thinking of lines to film.

First Girls Only Shred Sessions of 2012

In lieu of that capricious weather that has been plaguing this region with reckless abandon since the revered Halloween storm, the Girls Only Shred Session will have to be postponed until next Tuesday. In other very saddening news, Bear Peak along with the soul shredder's favorite, Granite Peak, closed a few minutes ago due to inclement weather. South and Vernon peak will remain open until 9pm tonight, so get there while you can. Some of us here at the Park Blog HQ took a sampling of the conditions this afternoon. It was soft, rain was minimal and intermittent, more off than on. This, of course, is no promise of anything, and the disclaimer applies that protects us from anyone claiming we didn't foresee on-coming rain, snow, sleet, clouds, volcano eruptions, hurricanes, tidal waves, end of the world and/or universe, doomsday predictions, prediction redundancy, negativity, lack of stoke, your favorite feature not being up, etc., etc., etc., etc. All of these things could happen at any time, but why worry about them when there's a hill to be ridden. Besides, other mountains closed entirely, and we're not them, we keep it real(er).

Today, Sunday, January 15th, seems to be marking the first day of real, actual winter. Anyone driving up 515 in a car luxurious enough to have a thermometer on the dash saw that temps were hovering around 8 degrees Fahrenheit at 9am this morning. Snow was being blown throughout the night, so provided one had the proper attire, today was one of the best days on hill so far. The sun shone throughout the day, and the guns were positioned at just the right locations so that those advocating goggle free snowboarding didn't have to ride from feature to feature with their heads facing uphill. Although, such posture does allow for a crowd pleasing trick, the switch regular ollie (said trick is found at the 1:19 mark).
In other news, the homies at Burton were hooking it up with demos throughout the day, giving perspective customers the chance to test their new line of hardgoods.

The airbag is fully operational for guests to throw themselves into, critique, spectate, and stoke out. A new favorite of the hill is to just post up near the fence and watch the inverted insanity.

Came up on some quick shots from the lift of the new features on Jumping Jack. Historically, this line is reserved for more the more experienced stylings of those affiliated with the discipline of slopestyle. This year, the opening line of Jumping Jack is taking a slightly different approach. The flat bar has dual take offs, one street style for frontside goofy riders, and one from the front. The down bar was salvaged from the stair set, so it has a good level of steep to it. The tube was brought up from the hike park and now sits with a slight upslope, making it ideal for back 360s off. As dusk approaches on this lovely Saturday of North Eastern winter weather, remember tomorrow has the sun shining. With all the new snow being blown throughout the park, the odds of not burning up some corduroy are slim.

BAG JUMP WILL BE OPEN TOMORROW

Every year High Cascade Snowboard Camp puts on the world's premier "mini-shred" contest. Its goal is to have 3 lanes of features that all flow together as if you could snowboard at Wallows, but with boxes and rails at the crest of each bank.
A recent luncheon with some of finer heads behind JibLab and Park Crew will give us all the privilege of attempting to parse out this montage of documents with a microscope in a futile attempt to understand how they plan on outdoing themselves this time. Which, they undoubtedly will.

In the mean time, you contest heads get the weekend off. So take some cruiser laps and prepare for SATURDAY JANUARY 21st when HCSC'S TRANS AM WILL BE HERE.

3rd Rail Jam Recap

For the past 4 years we've hosted the most unlikely contest in snowboarding and freeskiing, the 3rd Rail. 3rd Rail is one of those very rare joints where you can enter a snowboard/ski contest, take in a Raekwon show, and watch OG graffiti dudes paint live within the same 4 hour time block. 3rd Rail takes that East Coast identity born in the cold winters of Irvington and Newark, New Jersey and filters it up to the mountain. Being the jam is open to kids of all ages and skill levels the course always has great variety, this year unveiling the chillest feature going, 6" wide down-flat-down rail.

Nick put together this video recap so you could get a feel for everything that went down on hill.

Despite filming with a flip cam, iPhone, or Blackberry has become completely acceptable behavior in New York professional skateboarding, this underdog medium hasn't rightfully found its way into snowboarding. Richie filmed this with something called a "Contour pro," probably the most convenient camera in post-modern snowboard media.

The lines in this video are insane. Richie, RJ, Frank, Brett, Brett, and Walter put it down day after day.

Jed Is Down

Calgary native Jed Anderson might be one of the best snowboarders in the world. His part last year in Videograss' Shoot the Moon included tricks with trajectories previously never thought possible. (His part from Bon Voyage is on YouTube). Flying down the rail gardens double set, spinning a backside 270, and then somehow as if aided by a cosmic force, he was capable of coming off the rail switch. He also won the Canadian Open in Halfpipe once.

If that wasn't enough, this year, Jed rode away from a switch backside 2 disaster, and came out regular. Proof of which can be found here. Actually, watch all of those, contemporary street snowboarding is insane.

In between a busy schedule of landing tricks, setting sartorial trends, skating, and dunking garbage Jed stopped by Creek and took some laps.

Under Armour MTN's The 3rd Rail Jam returned to Mountain Creek for its fifth year on Saturday, January 7th. Named after New York City's most lethal subway rail, The 3rd Rail Jam unites some of the nation's best amateur skiers and snowboarders with local graffiti artists, hip-hop artists, bands and DJs.

Over 140 fearless competitors showed up Saturday afternoon to throw down in this winner-take-all event. Competitors in four divisions - Juniors (snowboarders ages 15 and under), Girls (snowboarders of all ages), Skiers (all ages) and Best of Breed (male snowboarders ages 16+) - had 45 minutes to showcase their skills to make it through to the finals for a chance to win cash money, gear and accessories.

When it was all said and done here's how it went down:

Girls - Elise Fugowski (two-time winner '11 and '12)

Salomon Team Sneak Peak

As many of you know, Salomon was here today to ride the new park in Bakersfield.

Features were ridden, footage was clocked, and East pow was slashed. Nick Dakota was out there to capture the onslaught of freestyle annihilation, as well as proud HVX connoisseur, Tanner Pendleton. Both of whom will be dropping edits for their respective production outlets, which will be posted here once they're finished. So check back.

Bakersfield Got That Makeover

Morning, everyone. Some beautiful new additions were installed last night for our Ski Barn/Salomon Team Vacation session today. You're going to be seeing a lot more progressive builds like this as park crew moves jibs from the rail yard to the hill. We also have one of the hardest working and most creative grooming departments going, so we won't be slacking on snow features either. They just had to wait for the snow to accumulate. Salomon is here today and 3rd Rail is this weekend, so if you see a Jib Lab, Park Crew, or Grooming employee, give 'em a shout out, because they're putting it down super hard for everyone.

That team, consisting of Jed Anderson, Chris Grenier, Scotty Arnold, Harrison Gordon, Chris Carr, and Cole St. Martin and possible surprise guests, will be lapping South on Thursday, so get out here and watch them throw down some of the smoothest technical rail and jump annihilation New Jersey will ever fall victim to.

They’ll be signing autographs on snow as well so you can have permanent proof that you came out.

JibLab Update

We're super excited for the start of the season and all the awesome events scheduled to take place at the park this year, including the return of the TransWorld Snowboarding TransAm. The crew at JibLab has been busy designing event setups and will introduce a new feature at each event.

In the meantime, we caught up with Jon to see what's good in the land of rails and boxes. Not too much needed to be said, as sparks were flying, paint was drying and rails and boxes were making their way into the beds of pickup trucks and moving to South.

The NSAA Safety Awards are given out annually to those resorts that have done an outstanding job of educating employees and guests about skiing and snowboarding responsibly. Our terrain park safety initiatives include: the requirement of all park visitors to complete a Park Pass safety program and quiz, dedicated learn-to freestyle terrain and instruction, constant terrain and feature monitoring and a strict helmet policy for all employees and guests taking freestyle lessons.

The closing weekend of Red Bull Super Hit went off under blue skies and warm temps at Mountain Creek in Vernon, New Jersey on Saturday, February 26th. Red Bull Super Hit marked the first-ever freeski event that has come to Mountain Creek from outside the mountain.

The group of skiers that showed up to compete ran the gamut from grom to rising local pro and hailed from NJ, PA, and VT. Mountain Creek built a signature feature for the day that featured a clear-walled Red Bull wallride on top of a large hip, enabling competitors to pick their line and hit the feature in a large variety of ways. The sunny skies and impressive trickery of the competitors drew the attention of everyone whether they were riding by on the trails or hanging out on the porch of the KINK bar.

After all of the backflips, huge spins, and creative rail jibbing that went down during the two 25-minute heats and 25-minute finals, it was Peter Engen who won the contest and walked away with a paid trip to compete in the Dumont Cup in March at Sunday River, Maine. Peter also won a pair of skis and a prize pack from the event sponsors. Second and third place won tons of prizes as well, and a Best Trick was awarded, earning another pair of skis. A product toss for competitors and spectators finished the event, with tons of smiles ending the picture perfect Mountain Creek day.

As much as we’d like to describe the first stop of the 2011 Superpass Superpark Qualifying Series as being a heated competition the seemingly sub arctic temps prohibit us from making any references that would lead readers to believe the conditions were the least bit hospitable. Wind would add to the contentious atmosphere and cause attrition to take place pre registration. Nonetheless dozens of New Jerseys finest jumpers arrived bright and early at Mountain Creek to partake in their chance at a Superpark invite as well as the heaps of prizes provided by Volcom, Capita, Electric, High Cascade Snowboard Camp and Bag Jump.

The terrain park staff at Mountain Creek went beyond the requisite triple line requirements which was requested to 25, 35, and 45 feet respectively. Rather than settle Mountain Creek stepped up and provided the Superpassers with a textbook 25 foot booter, complete with squared sides to a classic 35 foot step down gap. This gap was rad. Normal tricks looked three times as high and the perceived consequence afforded by the vertical cut uphill edge of the knuckle added drama to every attempt.

By showing skill, composure and creativity on each feature Brett Stewart set himself apart from the pack. This fall Brett Stewart will be joining snowboarding’s elite at Superpark.

Freeskier Magazine announced its ratings for Top 5 Parks in the nation, as well as regional terrain park rankings.

Awkward Stockpile Climbing

A few of us went up to see the remains of our 22' beast of a quarter pipe. Good news - it's still there and we're pushing all of it out for this Saturday's Stockpile Session.

I thought it would've been a good idea to climb it so you could gauge its size. Stupidly, I didn't think of how difficult (and scary) it would be to get down. Get ready for some awkward climbing.

FYI - Details on the setup will be posted later this week.

Jersey Riders Represent at Copper Mountain

Local mini shreds Alexa Cerra, JT Bingler, Stephen Cerra and Sean Neary just got back from the USASA Nationals at Copper Mountain. According to JT, they all had a lot of fun out there. The weather was nice and brought some fresh snow. They even got to meet pros like JJ Thomas and another Creek native, Danny Kass.

JT Bingler came in 36th out of a total of 70 competitors in the Youth Men slopestyle division. Stephen Cerra placed 19th in Youth Men boarder-cross division. Alexa Cerra brought home 3rd place in boarder-cross and 6th place in slopestyle for the 10-11 year old division.

April Fool's After School Sesh

Despite record-setting rainfall totals in March, we delivered one last shred day in April. Our 3rd annual April Fool's After School session featured 5 jibs bringing out close to 100 diehards. Scion Night Moves

We salvaged some snow in the Bear hike park, revamped and installed some features and hosted the 1st annual Scion Night Moves freeski competition. About 20 skiers came out to compete for cash and prizes totaling over $2,000.

Hometown Heroes

Congratulations go out to our hometown heroes Alexa Cerra, JT Bingler, Stephen Cerra and Sean Neary for throwing down at the Mid-Atlantic USASA Regional Championships.

Sean Neary and Alexa Cerra took home 1st place for the 10-11 year old division in slopestyle. JT Bingler secured 3rd place in the Youth 14-15 year old division. Stephen Cerra qualified for boardercross and is also an alternate in the slopestyle division. While they’re not old enough to see a rated R movie un-chaperoned, they’ll be traveling out to Copper Mountain on April 3rd to compete in the 21st Annual National Championships. The monstrosity living at the bottom of Big Bear was put to good use during Atmosphere Clothing's Quarters & Dimes quarter pipe competition. About 20 people of all ages came out to throw down for prize money and Atmosphere prize packages. The vibe was real mellow and it seemed like everyone around had a good time. It’s hard not to when you have fresh hotdogs right off the grill.

Red Bull Butter Cup Recap

In its sophomore year, the Red Bull Butter Cup came through Mountain Creek on Jan 30th. Riders in both the PRO and AM divisions were pretty stoked on the new jibs Red Bull cooked up. The features travel with the tour, but the Jib Lab topped off the course with a wooden hitching post and a slanted butter box. Check some photos from the event.
